The Page Mask and the Reading Ruler are two tools for staying focused on a particular part of the text.
The Page Mask is like cutting a hole in a sheet of paper and moving it up and down on text in a book or magazine. This is the electronic version of it.
The Reading Ruler is the electronic version of a notecard.
When
Using the Page Mask and Reading Ruler helps build focus and increase comprehension. Think about using these features when the material is difficult to understand, you keep losing your place, or you are in a noisy or distracting environment.
How
Let's look at how to use these tools in webReader and docReader.
For the Page Mask in webReader.
Click on a page that has the LISTEN player.
Click on the Hamburger, , to find more features.
Click on the Page Mask,
Pull the Page Mask down the page as it is being read.
You can increase or decrease the window size by clicking the plus or minus on the right-hand side of the Page Mask.
Click the "X" to close the Page Mask.
If you want to change the colors or the transparency of the colors, click on the Hamburger, , and then on Settings. Once there click on the third icon down which looks like a book, . Your Page Mask color selections and transparency can be adjusted on that screen.
NOTE: webReader does not have a Reading Ruler, but you can use the bottom edge of the Page Mask as you would a notecard.
For the Page Mask and the Reading Ruler in docReader: Classic and New Learner Experience
Navigate to the document.
Open a document in docReader according to your view.
Classic View - Click on the dropdown menu to the right of the file name and click "Open with docReader."
New Content View - Click on the speaker icon, then click on the hamburger on the right side to find these tools.
New Learner Experience - Click on "Open docReader," which is on the top right-hand side of the document.
Note: if you are unsure which view you are using, please look at the definitions page.
In the Classic View and the New Learner Experience View, click on the caret, , in the center of the top toolbar of docReader, which expands to show the lower toolbar.
Click on the Page Mask, , which is toward the left side of the lower toolbar.
Pull the Page Mask down the page as it is being read.

Click the "X" to close the Page Mask.
The Reading Ruler,, is also on this same toolbar. It works the same way as the Page Mask.
To adjust the color and transparency, click on Settings and scroll to the bottom. Click on Open below the heading Settings for Reading Tools.

Click on the hamburger, , located in the upper right-hand corner of docReader. This expands downward to show the remaining tools.
